How this works: cost per mile = fuel price ÷ MPG. That's it — no fuel "efficiency" magic. The comparison ignores diesel trucks' higher purchase price, DEF fluid, and costlier oil changes, but it also ignores their better resale value and low-end torque for towing. Treat the 5-year number as a tie-breaker, not a verdict.
