Best Truck Wheel & Tire Packages 2026: What I Actually Bought and Why
TL;DR: After fitting 35-inch mud-terrains on my Silverado and rubbing them into the fender liner on the first trip, I learned fitment the hard way. Here's what actually matters: bolt pattern, backspacing, and overall diameter — not the marketing photos. I'll walk through the packages I'd buy again, the ones I'd skip, and the measurements you need before clicking "order."
Why buy a package instead of wheels and tires separately?
When I first started looking at new wheels and tires, I priced out buying wheels from one place and tires from another. The total came to about $2,400 for my setup — plus $200 for mounting and balancing, plus the headache of making sure the wheel offset worked with the tire I picked.
Then I found a pre-mounted package from a shop that specialized in truck setups. Same wheels, same tires I wanted, already mounted, balanced, and TPMS sensors included. Total was $1,950 delivered to my door. I saved $650 and two hours of shop time. The only tradeoff: I couldn't swap the tire brand for a different one within the package. For me, that was fine — I already knew what tire I wanted.

The three numbers that matter (and the ones that don't)
Every truck wheel has a bunch of specs stamped on it. Most of them don't matter for fitment. Three do:
1. Bolt pattern. This is how many lug nuts you have and how far apart they are. Half-ton trucks (F-150, Silverado 1500, Ram 1500) are almost all 6x139.7mm, also written 6x5.5 inches. Three-quarter and one-ton trucks (F-250/350, 2500/3500 HD) are 8x165.1mm (8x6.5 inches). If the bolt pattern doesn't match, the wheel literally won't go on. No adapter needed — just the right pattern.
2. Backspacing (or offset). This is how far the wheel sits in or out from the hub. Too much backspacing and the tire rubs on the inside (suspension components, frame). Too little and it rubs on the outside (fender, fender liner). Most lifted half-tons need 4.5-6 inches of backspacing. Stock-height trucks typically need 3.5-4.5 inches. This is where most people get it wrong — they buy wheels that look right in photos but rub at full steering lock or full suspension compression.
3. Overall tire diameter. A 33-inch tire fits most half-ton trucks on stock suspension. A 35-inch tire usually needs a 2-inch lift or leveling kit. A 37-inch tire needs 3.5+ inches of lift and often some fender trimming. Don't guess — measure your current tire's overall diameter, then add the inches you want to go up. If the math puts you over your suspension's clearance, you need a lift before you need bigger tires.
The numbers that don't matter as much: wheel width (within reason — a 9-inch wheel fits a 12-inch tire fine), load range (E is overkill for most daily drivers), and beadlock capability (you don't need it unless you're airing down to 10 PSI off-road regularly).
The packages I'd actually buy
I've researched and in some cases bought from these setups. I'm not getting paid to recommend any of them — this is what I'd put on my truck if I were doing it again.
For off-road trucks (mud-terrain): Method NV wheels in 17x9 with -12 offset, paired with BFGoodrich KM3 mud-terrains in 35x12.5R17. This is the setup I ended up with after my first rub-and-trim disaster. The Method wheels have a ton of clearance for brake calipers, the -12 offset pushes the tire out just enough to clear the upper control arm at full compression, and the KM3s are the quietest mud-terrain I've found that still hooks in actual mud. Total package runs about $2,100-2,300 depending on the shop.
For all-around trucks (all-terrain): Fuel Offrock wheels in 20x9 with 0 offset, paired with Falken Wildpeak AT3W in 275/65R20 (which measures about 34 inches). This is the "I drive on pavement 90% of the time but want to look the part" setup. The AT3Ws are genuinely good in rain and light snow, they're quiet at highway speed, and they last 50,000+ miles. The 20-inch wheels look better on a street truck than 17s, but you sacrifice some sidewall for off-road protection. Package price: $2,200-2,500.
For work trucks (heavy-duty): Black Rhino Line X wheels in 18x9, paired with Cooper Discoverer AT3 4S in LT275/70R18. This is what I'd put on a truck that actually hauls and tows. The Load Range E tires handle the weight, the AT3s are rated for highway mileage, and the Black Rhino wheels are rated for 3,500 lbs per corner — which matters when you're loaded down. Package price: $1,800-2,100. Skip the mud-terrains on a work truck — they're louder, wear faster, and you're not off-road enough to justify them.
Budget pick: American Racing AR23 wheels (the classic 6-lug spoke design) in 16x8, paired with General Grabber ATX in 265/75R16. This is the "I want new rubber but I'm not spending $2,000" setup. The Grabber ATXs are surprisingly capable all-terrains — they're not going to match the Falkens in snow or the BFGs in mud, but they're $180 per tire instead of $350, and they'll last you 40,000 miles. Total package: $1,200-1,400. For a truck that's daily-driven and occasionally hits a dirt road, this is the smart buy.
What I got wrong the first time
I bought 35-inch mud-terrains on 17x9 wheels with 4.5 inches of backspacing. The wheels were fine. The tires were fine. The combination rubbed the upper control arm when I turned left and hit a bump at the same time. I didn't discover this until I was three miles down a forest road with no tools and a shredded fender liner.
The fix was either trimming the fender liner (which I did temporarily) or adding 1/4-inch spacers to push the wheel out (which I did permanently). The spacers cost $80 and took 20 minutes to install. If I'd measured backspacing against my truck's actual suspension clearance before ordering, I'd have saved myself the roadside repair.
Other mistakes: buying wheels that were too wide for my tire (a 10-inch wheel on a 12.5-inch tire stretches the sidewall and makes it vulnerable to punctures), not checking if my TPMS sensors would transfer (they didn't — had to buy new ones for $200), and forgetting that bigger tires change your speedometer reading (35s made my speedo read 3 mph slow, which I didn't notice until a radar ticket).
The real cost (beyond the package price)
The package price is not the final price. Budget for these on top:
- Mounting and balancing: $80-150 if not included. Some packages include it, some don't. Always ask.
- TPMS sensors: $150-250 for a new set if yours don't transfer. Some packages include sensors, some don't.
- Alignment: $100-150 after install. Bigger tires and different offset change your suspension geometry. Skip this and you'll wear the tires unevenly within 5,000 miles.
- Lift kit (if needed): $300-800 for a basic leveling kit, $1,000-2,000 for a full suspension lift. Factor this in if you're going bigger than 33s on stock height.
- Speedometer recalibration: $0 if you do it yourself with a tuner, $100-200 at a shop. Necessary if your tire diameter changes by more than 2 inches from stock.
Add all that up and a "$1,900 package" is really a $2,500-2,800 project. Still worth it if you're doing it right — just don't get sticker shock when the final invoice arrives.
How to verify fitment before you buy
Before you order any package, confirm three things:
1. Bolt pattern. Measure your current wheels or look up your truck's year/make/model. If it doesn't match the package, move on.
2. Backspacing/offset. Measure your current wheel's backspacing (take the wheel off, lay it face-down, put a straight edge across the back, measure from the straight edge to the hub mounting surface). Compare to the package's backspacing. If the new wheels have more backspacing than your current ones, the tire sits further in — check for suspension clearance. If they have less backspacing, the tire sits further out — check for fender clearance at full compression.
3. Overall diameter. Measure your current tire's height (or look up the exact model and size). Compare to the package tire's diameter. If you're going up more than 2 inches, you'll likely need a lift or leveling kit. If you're going up more than 3 inches, you'll probably need fender trimming too.
If the package seller can't tell you the backspacing and offset, don't buy from them. These are non-negotiable specs.
Living with bigger tires long-term
Once the package is installed, a few things change about how your truck behaves. Fuel economy drops — expect 1-3 MPG less depending on tire size and tread pattern. Mud-terrains are louder than all-terrains at highway speed; the KM3s I run add maybe 2-3 decibels of road noise, which is noticeable on long highway trips but not unbearable. Rotation intervals matter more with aggressive tread patterns — rotate every 5,000 miles to avoid uneven wear, especially on the outside shoulders if you turn hard frequently.
If you notice vibration at highway speed after installing new tires, it's almost always a balance issue, not a defect. Take it back to the shop and ask them to rebalance. Some shops charge for this the first time, but most will do it free if the tires were mounted by them.
